Fire-Safe Solar Wiring: The Case for Polycab and Siechem DC Cables

Solar panels generate DC (Direct Current), but your house grid runs on AC (Alternating Current). You cannot use regular house wires (PVC flexible wires) for solar.

If an installer tries to save ₹2,000 by using standard “Red/Black” AC wire, they are risking a fire hazard. The cost difference is negligible (~₹2,500), but the safety difference is life or death.

This guide explains why high-quality DC solar cables are essential and why we at Surya’s Solar enforce strict cable standards.

1. The Real Enemy: UV Radiation

Normal PVC wires (Finolex, Anchor, etc.) are designed for indoor use. On rooftops, they face 10+ hours of direct sun, every day.

What happens:

  • Year 1: Looks fine
  • Years 2–3: UV breaks down the PVC, making it brittle
  • Year 4: Small cracks appear
  • Year 5: Rain touches the live DC conductor → DC Arc Fault → sparks reaching 3000°C → fire

The Solution: XLPO Insulation

  • Electron-beam cured for toughness
  • UV-resistant for 25+ years
  • Halogen-free (no toxic smoke)
  • Durable in sun, rain, or mud

2. The Conductor: Tinned Copper vs. Bare Copper

Premium solar cables (Polycab, Siechem, Apar) use tinned copper.

Why tin?

  • Prevents oxidation (green copper oxide increases resistance → heat → fire)
  • Resists galvanic corrosion, especially in coastal Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry
  • Meets EN 50618 global solar cable standards

Red flag: If the installer uses plain red copper, stop immediately.

3. Voltage Drop & Wire Sizing

Wire size is calculated, not guessed. Resistance ($R \propto L/A$) determines energy loss.

  • Small homes: 4 sq.mm is sufficient (<1% loss)
  • High-rise/commercial: Longer runs may need 6 sq.mm or 10 sq.mm to keep loss <1.5%

Surya’s Rule: Distance >40m → automatically upgrade to 6 sq.mm at no extra cost.

4. Critical Joints: MC4 Connectors

90% of solar fires start at poorly made joints.

Common mistake: Twisting wires + black tape → melts under roof heat → sparks → fire.

Correct method: IP68 MC4 connectors

  • Lock securely
  • Waterproof
  • Rated for 30A
  • Original brands: Staubli or Polycab only

5. Cable Management

Even the best wire needs protection:

  • UV PVC conduit for all rooftop wiring
  • Perforated metal trays for commercial jobs
  • UV-Nylon cable ties (Black) instead of cheap white ones

6. Spotting Sub-Standard Installations

7. Conclusion: The Veins of Your Solar System

Solar panels are the heart; cables are the veins. Weak or cheap cables risk the entire investment.

Saving ₹3,000 on wires (~1.5%) can endanger a ₹2 Lakh system. At Surya’s Solar, we guarantee your cables are fire-safe and long-lasting, so you can sleep peacefully.
